On 14 March 2023, the UK Medicines regulator approved an application to reclassify the erectile dysfunction medication Propecia from prescription-only medicines (PEMs) to sole medications (FADMs) effective 21 March 2017. Propecia and Proscar are prescriptions-only medications, meaning they cannot be used to treat “any of a particular type of male sexual health problem” (these are referred to as male pattern baldness as they are not prescribed to treat the same diseases as branded prescription medicines).

Generic Propecia and Proscar are not currently covered by all medications covered by this drug class (primarily finasteride as it has a known effect and therefore must be taken in combination with finasteride). It is recommended that medications covered by this drug class arenot used for any of these conditions.

The reclassification application examines whether, at the last removal from a drug’s patent, generic Propecia and Proscar are any higher equivalents to any branded medications covered by this class. If both are to be reclassified as sole medications then drug class periods must also be reviewed as generic Propecia and Proscar must be taken as part of the process.

The application is opposed to the application of the drug-drug patent which requires that generic Propecia and Proscar be taken in combination with finasteride. Generic Propecia and Proscar are prescription-only medicines and therefore must not be prescribed to treat these diseases.

Details on the application

This application is unrelated to the male sexual health problems (MSHP) classification

Background

Approved in the UK in 2015, Propecia and Proscar are only available as FADMs.These medications are taken in combination with a male sexual health drug (e.g.finasteride). This combination is not a “generic” medication.Generic medications are not prescribed to treat these diseases.Generic medications are not available in all conditions. To beused, the medication must be taken in combination with finasteride.

Generic medications must NOT be prescribed to treat “any of a particular type of male sexual health problem” (these are referred to as “male pattern baldness”).This classification includes erectile dysfunction (ED), and its more common symptoms (e.g. decreased libido, erectile dysfunction-ED).The applications were assigned to the MHRA in 2017 and are opposed to the MHRA’sdrug-drug patent. The application examines whether generic Propecia and Proscar are any higher equivalents to any branded medications covered by thedrug patent

Use in Patients with Erectile Dysfunction

To be reclassified as sole medications (e.g.) then drug class periods must also be reviewed. The application is opposed to the drug-drug patent which requires that generic Propecia and Proscar be taken in combination with finasteride. Generic Propecia and Proscar are prescription-only medicines meaning they must not be prescribed to treat “any of a particular type of male sexual health problem” (these are referred to as “male pattern baldness”).

Propecia for Hair Loss

by Drugs.com. Last updated on Aug 23, 2024.

A hair loss specialist has been prescribed by a doctor to men who are experiencing male pattern baldness. The hair loss is a slow or complete process that involves a slow, or partial stop. It begins in the crown of the head, then gradually progresses through the hair follicles, eventually reaching the top of the head. The hair loss usually lasts for around 4 months or longer, but can last up to 12 months depending on the severity of the condition. Some men can experience hair loss in the crown of the head for the first time, but not in the entire hair shaft, and that's normal. In other men, the hair loss may be temporary and permanent. This type of hair loss may not appear for a month or longer but may not appear for a year. It is more common in men who are also thinning hair, and in this age group, male pattern baldness is much more common. Men who are younger are more likely to experience hair loss, but it's more likely to be permanent. In the majority of men, the hair loss can be temporary. It's important to note that hair loss does not always occur in the same way. Men may notice that hair they have is starting to fall out, and that they may notice new, lighter, longer hair growth in the first few months of the hair loss. Men who have had hair loss in the past may also experience a sudden decrease or loss of hair growth. The hair loss usually begins in the crown or top of the head, and the hair follicles stop producing new hair altogether.
